Attorney Jackie Cowin Confirmed as Associate Justice of the Superior Court

KP Law is thrilled to announce that Attorney Jackie Cowin has been confirmed as an Associate Justice at the Massachusetts Superior Court. She was vetted by the Judicial Nominating Committee and then, on March 13, 2019, nominated by Governor Charlie Baker. She appeared earlier this month before the Governor’s Council for its “advice and consent”, and today the Governor’s Council confirmed Attorney Cowin’s appointment.

Attorney Cowin has practiced at the firm since 2002, representing client municipalities of all sizes throughout the Commonwealth from Williamstown to Provincetown and the Islands. For that reason, many of you are familiar with Jackie and her work. A Shareholder at the firm since 2014, Jackie’s practice has focused on complex litigation, including civil rights actions, police misconduct cases, and employment discrimination, along with a wide variety of other municipal issues including, for example, sewer and water fee challenges and land-use matters, in addition to providing guidance concerning general municipal law matters. Attorney Cowin has tried cases at the federal and state level, including the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Superior Court and the Land Court. She has also argued appeals before the First Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, Supreme Judicial Court and the Appeals Court and has handled hundreds of dispositive motions in the Superior Court.

In his press release concerning Jackie’s nomination, Governor Baker stated, “Attorney Cowin’s litigation and appellate experience representing municipalities across the Commonwealth before a number of courts has prepared her well for a position on the Superior Court…” Echoing the Governor’s statement, Lt. Governor Karyn Polito stated, “All parties that come before Attorney Jackie Cowin will be well served by her legal and courtroom knowledge and strong work ethic. I am confident that she will serve the Superior Court with distinction, if confirmed.”

We at the firm share the confidence of the Governor and Lt. Governor that Jackie will excel in her new role, as she has in her current role. The firm’s attorneys and staff, and all of our clients, will miss Jackie as she moves into this exciting next chapter of her career!

Please join us in wishing Jackie every success as she takes on this new challenge!
